NJPW Wrestler of the Month: September 2020
Tomohiro Ishii
Key Matches:
Never Openweight Six Man Tag Title Match: vs Chaos - New Japan Road 2020 - Sept 11th
G1 Climax 30: vs Minoru Suzuki; vs Will Ospreay; vs Kota Ibushi; vs Shingo Takagi
There’s an old saying that the ‘G’ in G1 stands for Hirooki Goto, but I posit that it really stands for Tomohiro Ishii. It’s a silent, and invisible, ‘G’, but it’s there nonetheless. Every G1 season Big Tom brings his G game, and this year is no exception.
Even before the G1 started, Ishii was part of a very good Never Openweight Six Man Tag Title match against the other half of Chaos. Then once the tournament kicked off, he had stellar matches with the above list of men, all killer performers themselves. Despite turning 45 in a couple of months, Ishii continues to be a wrestler the promotion can lean on to bring it in the ring every night, and he was rewarded with a semi-main and a main event match during the early part of the G1. When it comes to September 2020 (and most any month), it’s all killer, no filler, with Tomohiro Ishii.
Honourable Mention: Tetsuya Naito
